This animation is from a CAD model and shows the action of the central “snail” which rotates around the centre pipe, driven by the force of the water which enters down the pipe.

The force of the water hits the movable flap valves which are twisted out to be clear of the edge of the snail as it rotates. After the snail passes they are quickly rotated back against the centre pipe.

Water enters the pipe at the top of the machine, passes down through the large bevel gear to enter at the top of the snail.

It leaves at the bottom of the snail, draining from the lower pipe..
